1. Judy Woodruff

2. Melinda French Gates

Before becoming one of the world’s most influential philanthropists, Melinda French Gates was a Duke student studying computer science and economics. She later joined Microsoft and eventually co-founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Her work has had a massive impact on global health, education, and gender equality. 3. Ken Jeong

Actor Ken Jeong graduated from Duke, where he was a pre-med student with dreams of studying drama. 4. Grant Hill

Before he became a respected NBA player and later a broadcaster, Grant Hill was dominating the court at Duke while double-majoring in history and political science. After earning his MBA from Duke’s Fuqua School of Business, he became the CEO of Apple Inc., one of the most valuable companies in the world. Known for his calm leadership style and operational genius, Cook stepped into the nearly impossible role of succeeding Steve Jobs with grace. Duke helped sharpen his business instincts and served as a springboard for his legendary career in Silicon Valley.

6. Ricardo Lagos

Duke’s global reach shows up in alumni like Ricardo Lagos, a former President of Chile who brought both academic depth and political grit to the world stage. Before leading a nation, Lagos studied economics at Duke University, where he received a PhD in 1966. Lagos is perhaps best known for openly opposing the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, even though doing so carried serious personal risk. He embodies everything Duke stands for: a deep commitment to public service matched with renowned academic rigor.
