1. Andy Warhol

Yes, the Andy Warhol, the artist who pioneered the Pop Art movement and survived a high-profile assassination attempt. Warhol studied graphic design on a scholarship at Carnegie Mellon (then the Carnegie Institute of Technology) way back in the 1940s. His time there laid the foundation for his fascination with commercial imagery and mass production. Warhol’s legacy continues to influence not just art, but advertising, fashion, and media culture, and it all started in Pittsburgh.

2. John Forbes Nash Jr.

A brilliant and unconventional thinker, John Forbes Nash Jr. completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at CMU in mathematics (before heading over to Princeton University to complete a PhD). His pioneering work in Game Theory reshaped economics and earned him the Nobel Prize. And in case you don’t recognize him by name, you might recognize his life story, which later reached a broader audience through the film A Beautiful Mind. 3. James Gosling

Often referred to as the “father of Java,” James Gosling earned his PhD in computer science from Carnegie Mellon. His creation of the Java programming language fundamentally changed software development, powering everything from enterprise systems to mobile applications and cementing CMU’s reputation for cultivating top minds in the STEM disciplines and giving schools like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology a run for their money.

4. Holly Hunter

Academy Award-winning actress Holly Hunter (although you might know her as Elastigirl from Pixar’s The Incredibles) honed her craft at Carnegie Mellon’s prestigious School of Drama. Known for her intense, emotionally layered performances, she earned an Oscar for her role in The Piano and has remained a powerful presence in both film and television.

5. Ted Danson

Ever heard of someone who transferred out of Stanford University? Well, meet Ted Danson. Before becoming a household name on Cheers or playing a fictional version of himself on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Ted Danson studied drama at Carnegie Mellon, having transferred there from Stanford because of the strength of its drama program. His training there helped shape the comedic timing and versatility that audiences across America know and love.

6. Leslie Odom Jr.

A Tony Award-winning performer, Leslie Odom Jr. graduated from Carnegie Mellon’s School of Drama. Odom would go on to originate the role of Aaron Burr in Hamilton. His performance helped define one of the most influential Broadway productions of the 21st century. As CMU quotes Odom on their page highlighting alumni, “Carnegie Mellon University was everything. I like to say half of my education came from my professors and the other half was from my classmates – these really talented, brilliant kids from all over the country. We learned and stole ideas from each other and challenged each other. It was really good for me, and I think for all of us, the way that we pushed each other.”
