The data we’ve compiled above, drawn from public Common Data Sets on MIT’s website, highlight just how competitive the transfer admission process is at MIT. The highest transfer acceptance rate recorded over the last four years, for which we have data, was 2.38% in the 2023-2024 admission cycle. This compares to the 4.52% first-year acceptance rate recorded that year, representing roughly 50% decrease in the likelihood of admission for transfers. For the 2021-2022 admission cycle, in which only 1.39% of the 1,514 students applying to transfer were admitted, the transfer acceptance rate was 65% lower than the first-year acceptance rate (3.96%). 

Nonetheless, it would be inaccurate to say that MIT simply does not value its transfer applicants. There’s actually a compelling set of reasons why MIT admissions officers would never neglect this special class of applicant, and why, if you’re eyeing a transfer to MIT, you shouldn’t throw in the towel.

Why the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Respects Transfer Applicants

While the competition is high, the rewards for transfer applicants to MIT are great. And at least a few dozen of these students earn admission every year because MIT understands that transfers bring a unique perspective to campus that can’t be found anywhere else. Transfer applicants are far more likely than first-year applicants to come from low-income backgrounds, be the first in their families to attend college, and to have served in America’s armed forces. Moreover, these students often come from community colleges and unconventional educational paths, contributing to the diversity of the student body. But this uniqueness isn’t the only reason why they’re highly coveted.

The second reason MIT would never turn its back on transfer applicants is that these students are data ghosts, meaning they can be admitted to an elite school without adversely affecting that school’s institutional metrics. The academic data of all first-year students must be reported to the Common Data Set, which informs everything from college rankings to third-party accreditation. Transfer students, on the other hand, don’t show up in these equations, meaning they can fly under the radar. Admissions officers thus need not worry that a transfer student’s lackluster test score or GPA will drive down institutional metrics.
