The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a school apart from the rest when it comes to admissions selectivity. And with the Class of 2030 cycle in our rearview mirror, it’s time to get into the admissions weeds.

While the Class of 2030 cycle was no exception to the fierce competition typically found at this Cambridge, MA-based school, it didn’t break any current records for acceptance rate or application pool size. Here’s a closer breakdown:

Unfortunately, MIT’s Common Data Set archive does not stretch back very far (only through the last six years). Still, the data points we do have access to are enough to paint a robust picture of how this highly selective university conducts its admissions process.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Class of 2030 in Historical Perspective

While the Class of 2030’s 28,349 didn’t come anywhere near to breaking the record set by the Class of 2026 for most applicants in a single cycle (which stands at a whopping 33,796), nor did it break the same cycle’s record for lowest acceptance rate (3.96%), it’s 28,349 applicants and 4.58% acceptance rate are still the envy of many of it’s elite college peers, including many of the Ivy League schools.

The 1,299 students admitted to the Class of 2030 form a more or less average-sized cohort compared with recent years, suggesting that MIT admissions officers aren’t anticipating any shifts in yield rate (i.e., the percentage of admitted students who enroll). Could this mean that the waitlist acceptance rate at MIT will remain similar to last year’s? That remains to be seen!

The Demographic Breakdown of the MIT Class of 2030

In a press release on the subject, MIT shared the following info about the incoming Class of 2030: “These 1,299 students hail from all 50 states, 58 countries, and nearly a thousand different high schools.” This brief report goes on to detail that “of the students to whom we do not offer admission today, [MIT admission officers] have placed a modest number on our waitlist and informed the balance that we will not be able to admit them to the Class of 2030.”

As far as the socioeconomic, racial, or gender makeup of this fresh batch of MITers, we’ve been left in the dark, although such data won’t be hidden away from our prying eyes for long, as such figures must be reported each year in the Common Data Set.
