In fact, The Common Data Set indicates that a whopping 95% of admits to the UNC Class of 2029 graduated from high school with a 4.0 GPA. However, this statistic reflects weighted GPAs, so it’s not totally reliable. Still, it highlights the importance that admissions officers at this research university place on academic achievement.

Are UNC’s Admitted Students Typically At or Near The Top of Their High School Classes?

According to UNC’s Common Data Set, 76% of members of the Class of 2029 graduated in the top tenth of their high school’s graduating class. So while there is no explicit requirement for a 4.0 GPA to earn admission, stellar grades are a de facto requirement.

What Kind of SAT or ACT Scores Are Needed To Get Into UNC?

As of the 2026-2027 admission cycle, students with a weighted GPA of 2.8 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) will not be required to submit a test score. Students with a weighted GPA below 2.8 (on a 4.0 scale) will be required to submit either an ACT score of 17 or higher or an SAT score of 930 or higher.

Despite what these requirements may suggest to the contrary, admissions officers at UNC and other selective universities seek students who excel in the five core subjects, English, social studies, math, science, and foreign language, during all four years of high school. They also expect a five-year commitment to foreign languages, starting in eighth grade.

What Kinds of Extracurriculars Does UNC Like To See?

What UNC admissions officers are not looking for is well-rounded students: students who excel in sports, music, community service, leadership, and more. Instead, they want singularly talented students. Together, the singularly gifted students admitted to North Carolina form a well-rounded class.
