The University of Michigan has a reputation spanning over two centuries. Every single undergraduate program offered by this public research university is renowned for producing some incredible alumni. It’s no surprise that the school was ranked the 20th-best college in the nation in the 2026 US News & World Report annual college ranking. But this renown naturally means a ton of people want to get their chance to join this campus community. How should a high schooler with sights set on the University of Michigan go about securing admission?

What Is the University of Michigan?

The University of Michigan has an undergraduate student body of approximately 35,000 students on its Ann Arbor, Michigan campus. According to the 2025-26 Common Data Set, 15,461 full-time undergraduate males and 18,663 undergraduate females are currently enrolled. The Class of 2029 saw increases in the number of first-generation and low-income students who applied, and the Class Profile indicates that the most-represented countries in this cohort are China and Canada.

University of Michigan Admissions Requirements

How does one even begin to put their best foot forward and earn admission to this school? It’s no walk in the park, but there are plenty of steps you can take to optimize your odds. University of Michigan GPA Requirements

There is no minimum GPA or standardized test score to qualify for admission to UMich per se, as academic performance is just one of several evaluated dimensions. However, UMich still values students who have challenged themselves by taking the most rigorous coursework available, and a closer look at the data reveals a few de facto academic requirements that prospective applicants should keep in mind. 

For example, The Common Data Set reveals that 38.8% of first-year admits to the Class of 2029 had a 4.0 GPA in high school and that virtually all students had a GPA in excess of 3.50. 97.8% of admits submitted this data with their applications, indicating that a small sample size isn’t really skewing this data.

Does the University of Michigan Look at Class Rank?

While the Common Data Set lacks any class rank data, our highly educated guess is that the vast majority of UMich admits graduated in the top tenth percentile of their high school graduating classes.

University of Michigan SAT/ACT Score Requirements

As of the publication of this blog, UMich is test-optional, meaning students are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores. However, optional never really means optional in the case of elite college admissions, and any UMich applicant worth their salt will certainly submit such scores.

Amongst members of the UMich Class of 2029, 55% submitted SAT scores, and 18% submitted ACT scores.

Does the University of Michigan Superscore Students’ SAT or ACT Scores?

A superscore combines the highest section scores from each individual test sitting for admissions evaluation. UMich does superscore test results, but here’s the caveat:

At Ivy Coach, we caution against submitting more than one test administration for admissions evaluation. It shows Michigan that you had to work harder than many to achieve your highest scores and that your testing performance has inconsistencies. That said, while it’s not ideal, sometimes students have no choice but to superscore.

What High School Courses Does The University of Michigan Require?

University of Michigan Undergraduate Admissions lays out the following recommendations for high school curriculum to best prepare for the rigor of the school’s various undergraduate programs:

1 Students entering the Ross School of Business are required to complete four units of mathematics of their choice. Two years of world language are required, with the same language preferred. Calculus is not a requirement, and a student’s math record is viewed holistically. 

2 Students entering the College of Engineering are required to have four units of mathematics, with trigonometry or pre-calculus required and calculus highly recommended, and three units of science, with chemistry and physics required.

3 Students entering the School of Kinesiology are required to have three units of science, with biology, physics, chemistry, and anatomy/physiology highly recommended. Three units of mathematics are also required, with statistics recommended.

4 Students entering the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts are strongly encouraged to take four years of language study, with two years of the same world language required for admission (American Sign Language is included).

5 Students entering the School of Nursing are required to have completed three units of mathematics and four units of science, with one unit each of biology and chemistry. Four units of mathematics are recommended.

6 Students entering the College of Pharmacy are required to have completed three units of mathematics and three units of science, with one unit each of biology and chemistry. Four units of both mathematics and science are recommended.

We at Ivy Coach would like to add that it’s never advisable to take a core subject class (English, social studies, science, math, or a foreign language) for fewer than four years. Highly selective institutions across America look for students who have excelled in their core subjects for all four years of high school. What’s more, foreign language study should begin by eighth grade.

What Extracurriculars Does Michigan Look For in Applicants?

Extracurriculars should never be taken with a one-size-fits-all approach regarding elite college admissions. Applicants should focus their efforts on pursuing their one passion or specialty to the fullest extent possible, which we at Ivy Coach would call a “singular hook.”

To curate a well-rounded class, Michigan’s admissions officers prize highly specialized students. Well-rounded students do not cut it, as they contribute little to the diversity of an incoming class. So who does? The student who has dedicated themselves fully to a specific pursuit, such as marine biology, basket weaving, or political advocacy. Such students reassure Michigan’s admissions officers that they will make the most of their time on campus.

University of Michigan Application Requirements

UMich accepts The Common Application. Students must submit a counselor letter of recommendation, one teacher letter of recommendation, and UMichigan-specific supplemental essay responses.

Who to Ask For Letters of Recommendation

Applicants to the University of Michigan should ask their teacher, ideally a junior year teacher in a core subject, in addition to their school counselor, for letters of recommendation.

Does Michigan Require an Alumni Interview?

Michigan does not conduct interviews as part of the admissions process.

What are Michigan’s Supplemental Essay Topics?

Essays are one of the most important aspects of a competitive college application. In addition to The Common Application’s Personal Statement, UMich applicants have to complete the Michigan supplemental essay questions. 

These additional supplemental questions are as follows:

1. At the University of Michigan, we are focused on developing leaders and citizens who will challenge the present and enrich the future. In your essay, share with us how you are prepared to contribute to these goals. This could include the people, places, experiences or aspirations that have shaped your journey and future plans. (100-300 words)

2. Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific undergraduate College or School (including preferred admission and dual degree programs) to which you are applying at the University of Michigan. How would that curriculum support your interests? (100-550 words)

University of Michigan Application Deadlines

Michigan’s three admissions rounds are termed Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision. 

Early Decision is a new program launched during the 2025-2026 admissions cycle in which enthusiastic students who know UMich is where they are meant to be can apply by November 1st and receive a decision by late December. This round is binding.

Early Action applications are non-binding and due on November 1st. These decisions come out by late January. 

Regular Decision applications are non-binding and due on February 1st, with an early April decision date.
