Many consider Rice University among the best elite colleges that Texas has to offer. And if you ask the 2026 US News & World Report annual college ranking, which gives this private research university 17th place for best college in the nation, you’d be supported in this belief. However, a problem remains: how does one gain admission to this top school? 

What Is Rice University?

Proudly located in H-Town, Rice consists of a student body with 4,789 undergraduates. According to the 2024-25 Common Data Set, 2,352 full-time undergraduate males and 2,331 undergraduate females are currently enrolled. The Class of 2029 profile reveals that 50% of campus identities are male and 50% are female, which breaks from a common trend in elite colleges of Rice’s caliber, in which women tend to outnumber men.

Rice Admissions Requirements

Getting into Rice is no small feat. It’s not simply good grades that make the difference between an applicant who gets in and one who doesn’t. What other criteria do Rice admissions officers use to split hairs between highly competitive candidates? We’re glad you asked! Let’s review:

Rice University GPA Requirements

There is, technically, no minimum GPA requirement to get into Rice, and admissions officers certainly would not claim otherwise to the many starry-eyed but underqualified applicants who help drive down Rice’s acceptance rate when they apply. It might be hard to believe, but admissions officers at schools like Rice are certainly in the business of misleading applicants for this very reason.

Does Rice Look at Class Rank?

Well, yes and no. Many high schools do not, in fact, calculate class rank. However, 89% of Rice admits to the Class of 2028 attended schools that do and graduated in the top tenth percentile of their respective graduating classes (ranking is more common in Texas, and many applicants are applying from Rice’s home state!). So great grades are expected of all competitive applicants to Rice, whether they’ll acknowledge it or not.

Rice University SAT/ACT Score Requirements

Rice has maintained its test-optional policy through the 2026-27 admissions cycle, meaning your application does not require SAT and ACT scores. However, unlike many other schools, Rice is actually transparent about the fact that those who do not submit test scores are indeed at a disadvantage, a fact we at Ivy Coach have been screaming from the rooftops ever since test-optional policies became popular a few years ago. 

Amongst members of the Rice Class of 2028, 48% submitted SAT scores, and 22% submitted ACT scores.

Does Rice Superscore Students’ SAT or ACT scores?

A superscore combines the highest section scores from each individual test sitting for admissions evaluation. Rice does superscore results after receiving all test results the applicant has at their disposal.

However, at Ivy Coach we caution against submitting more than one test administration for admissions evaluation. Submitting multiple scores shows Rice that you had to work harder than many to achieve your highest scores and that your testing performance has inconsistencies. That said, while it’s not ideal, sometimes students have no choice but to superscore.

What High School Courses Does Rice Require?

Rice recommends the following high school curriculum to prepare for the academic rigor of the College:

Of course, it’s not advisable to take any core subject for fewer than four years. Highly selective institutions across America seek students who have excelled in their core subjects throughout all four years of high school. What’s more, foreign language study should begin by eighth grade.

What Extracurriculars Does Rice Look For in Applicants?

There is no magic formula in extracurricular activities that will impress admissions officers at Rice. Applicants should focus on pursuing their one true passion with deep commitment.

Despite colloquial knowledge that schools like Rice value well-rounded applicants, the hard truth is that Rice does not seek well-rounded students, as they do not instill faith that they will make the most out of their four years on campus. Instead, exceptional candidates, like a world-class statistician or a budding entrepreneur, will always stand out.

Rice accepts The Common Application. Students must submit a letter of recommendation from a counselor, two letters of recommendation from teachers, and Rice-specific supplemental essay responses.

Who to Ask For Letters of Recommendation

Applicants to Rice should ask two teachers, ideally two junior-year teachers in core subjects, in addition to their school counselor, for letters of recommendation.

Does Rice University Require an Alumni Interview?

No, any interviews conducted with Rice alumni are at the discretion of the admissions committee. Across all highly selective colleges, the interview component of any given application is one of the least important aspects.

In lieu of a traditional interview, however, Rice also allows domestic applicants to record and submit a 60-90 second video via Glimpse as part of their application. Similar to interviews offered directly by Rice, Glimpse videos are optional. In any event, we do not recommend Rice applicants overthink the video with fancy editing. That said, when Rice says optional, we say mandatory (if you want to optimize your case for admission).

What are Rice’s Supplemental Essay Topics?

In addition to The Common Application Personal Statement or the Coalition essay, Rice applicants have to complete a Rice-specific question, to which applicants must respond in 500 words or less:
