Carnegie Mellon University is not only a STEM research powerhouse, but also an ascendant force in higher education for student artists and academically ambitious high schoolers.

Tied for 20th place in the 2026 edition of US News and World Report’s “Best Colleges” ranking, CMU is a great alternative to such institutions as MIT or Caltech for the math and science whizzes out there. But just how hard is it to get into CMU, and what are the requirements?

What Is Carnegie Mellon University?

CMU is located in the heart of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The school’s 2025-26 Common Data Set indicates that 7,728 full-time undergraduates call campus home, which breaks down into 3,890 men, 3,350 women, and 237 students of unknown gender. The Class of 2028, the most recent cohort for which we have such data, is composed of students from 47 states and 43 countries. 

Carnegie Mellon Admissions Requirements

Although there is no minimum GPA requirement for admission, many students with near-perfect grades and test scores still receive rejection letters each year. Still, the most competitive applicants have consistently challenged themselves for all four years of high school with the most difficult coursework available to them.

Is there an official GPA requirement or cut-off for CMU admission? No, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t an unofficial requirement. All it takes is a glance at the Common Data Set to see that 43.9% of the admits to the Class of 2029 had a 4.0 GPA in high school, and 82.5% graduated in the top tenth of their high school graduating class.

Does CMU Look at Class Rank?

Graduating in the top tenth of your high school’s graduating class is all but a requirement for CMU admission. While admissions officers at this top-tier school certainly do weigh other factors, stellar grades are the bare minimum for competitive applicants. 

CMU Test Score Score Requirements

Testing requirements at CMU vary by undergraduate program. The School of Computer Science requires applicants to submit either SAT or ACT scores. The College of Engineering, the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Heinz College’s Information Systems Program, the Mellon College of Science, and the Tepper School of Business operate with a test-flexible policy, meaning that applicants must submit either AP/IB exam scores or SAT/ACT scores. The College of Fine Arts is test-optional.

Does Carnegie Mellon Superscore Students’ SAT or ACT scores?

A superscore combines the highest section scores from each individual test sitting for admissions evaluation. CMU does superscore SAT results, but does not superscore ACT results. 

However, submitting multiple SAT administrations shows CMU that you had to work harder than many to achieve your scores (which isn’t ideal). Students should submit more than one score report only for superscoring.

What High School Courses Does CMU Require?

The CMU undergraduate curriculum requirements vary by undergraduate program. Admissions officers expect competitive applicants to have completed the following high school curriculum:

• 4 years Mathematics*
• 1 year Chemistry
• 1 year Physics
• 1 year Biology
• 2 years Foreign Language
• 3 Electives
• *Four years of mathematics should include at least algebra, geometry, trigonometry, analytic geometry, elementary functions (pre-calculus) and preferably calculus. Advanced mathematics courses are strongly encouraged, especially a course in calculus.

We at Ivy Coach do not recommend that CMU-aspiring high school students limit their studies to just two years of social science, science, or foreign language. And a lack of specification for any one subject should not be taken as carte blanche not to take any courses therein. At any highly selective college, including CMU, admissions officers prize students who excel in core subjects for all four years of high school (and in the case of foreign language study, five years since it’s expected that students begin their foreign language study in eighth grade).

What Extracurriculars Does CMU Look For in Applicants?

CMU emphasizes deep involvement and passion over well-roundedness in extracurricular engagement. Carnegie Mellon University Application Requirements

CMU applicants must complete their applications through The Common Application. The application consists of a series of short essay questions, a high school teacher recommendation (as well as an optional second teacher recommendation), and a secondary school report that includes a counselor recommendation.

Who to Ask For Letters of Recommendation

Applicants to CMU should ask two teachers, ideally two junior year teachers, in addition to their school counselor for letters of recommendation. One of the teacher recommendations must come from a math or science teacher, and the other from one of the remaining core subjects.

Does CMU Require an Alumni Interview?

CMU does not conduct interviews as part of the college admissions process.

What are Carnegie Mellon University’s Supplemental Essay Topics?

Essays are one of the most important aspects of a competitive college application. CMU applicants have to complete the following essay questions in 300 words or fewer each:

1. Most students choose their intended major or area of study based on a passion or inspiration that’s developed over time – what passion or inspiration led you to choose this area of study?

2. Many students pursue college for a specific degree, career opportunity or personal goal. Whichever it may be, learning will be critical to achieve your ultimate goal. As you think ahead to the process of learning during your college years, how will you define a successful college experience?

3. Consider your application as a whole. What do you personally want to emphasize about your application for the admission committee’s consideration? Highlight something that’s important to you or something you haven’t had a chance to share. Tell us, don’t show us (no websites please).

When Are CMU’s Application Deadlines?

CMU’s two admissions rounds are Early Decision and Regular Decision. Both rounds are non-binding. The deadlines for these two rounds are as follows: November 3rd for Early Decision and January 5th for Regular Decision.
