By now, all applicants to the Fordham University Class of 2030 have received notice of their decisions. Fordham is a Jesuit university located in The Bronx, New York, and has become an increasingly competitive spot in the past few years. In fact, the Class of 2030 at Fordham University saw record-high application numbers: the admissions team read over 54,000 submitted applications. 47% of applicants were offered admission, a dramatic dip from the Class of 2029’s 58%. As we discussed, Fordham saw a major swell in applications this admission cycle. They got about 10,360 more applications than they did for the Class of 2029. This is due to increased efforts by Fordham University to promote the school nationally and abroad. “As always, we sought to create a diverse and inclusive entering class by casting a wide geographic net in our recruitment while also seeking students of the highest academic caliber,” said Michael Gratale, Fordham’s vice president for enrollment strategy. “This is a remarkable surge in applications, and our applicants showed the same levels of academic achievement as we’ve seen in years past.” Before this push, applications to Fordham had stayed relatively consistent the past few admissions cycles, and the acceptance rate remained above 50%.

If you’re a member of the debate team, the robotics team, the field hockey team, and the drama department…well, then, you’re merely a member of those groups. You don’t stand out in any of these pursuits. Fordham University would much rather accept a nationally ranked debate champ than a kid who spent an hour or two on debate a week because he spent the rest forgetting Shakespeare lines and fumbling the ball in football practice. 

In particular, these extracurriculars catered to Fordham’s Jesuit tradition of community service. As Fordham put it in their press release, “Many members of the admitted class have already demonstrated caring hearts and a desire to ignite change…by founding nonprofits or taking other initiatives to help others. They founded advocacy organizations, published peer-reviewed research, or launched nonprofits providing basic resources, education, or enrichment to those in need.”
