The admissions statistics are in the books for the Carnegie Mellon University Class of 2022. A record-breaking 24,351 students applied to the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based university this year. This figure was a remarkable 19% higher than the same figure for the Class of 2021. Indeed not only did Carnegie Mellon, a school with a reputation for excellence in the field of computer science, set a record this year with the number of applications received — but it did so in style by smashing the previous record. More specifically, applicants to the School of Computer Science surged by 30% this year. Applicants to the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences went up by 29%. The Tepper School of Business (26%), the Mellon College of Science (20%), the College of Engineering, and the College of Fine Arts also experienced surges in applications. The latter two schools posted double digit increases as well.

Breakdown of the Carnegie Mellon Class of 2022

As reported in the Carnegie Mellon press release about their incoming CMU Class of 2022, “The diversity of the applicant pool also grew at record pace, including increases in applications from Asian-Americans (up 30 percent), African-Americans (up 26 percent), and Hispanic-Latinos (up 20 percent). International student applicants increased by 7 percent. The pool of female applicants also continued to grow dramatically, up 22 percent from last year.”

Our regular readers may remember when, back in 2016, Carnegie Mellon enrolled women within their computer science and engineering programs at two to three times the national averages. And it was in 2017 when more women than men chose to matriculate to Carnegie Mellon, a school so well regarded particularly by those in the field of computer science (although there’s a lot more to CMU, too!). So it’s nice to see that the pool of female applicants to the university grew by 22% this year. As Carnegie Mellon continues to break barriers in the field of computer science, particularly for women, we hope other schools soon follow on their heels. We know some schools are already right there with them!

Congratulations to all students who earned admission to the Carnegie Mellon Class of 2022!
