American University is a moderately selective private research university that is not for the academic faint of heart. Sure, it’s no Harvard, but with the heightened competition across elite college admissions cycles in recent years, no student, including prospective members of this Washington, DC-based campus community, should take for granted that they have the chops necessary to earn admission.

At most institutions of American universities of caliber, the acceptance rate has declined with each admissions cycle. Not the case here: the acceptance rate in the 2020s for American University appears to be a reverse bell curve, with recent years’ acceptance rates resembling those recorded ten or so years ago. Nonetheless, it’s important to review the academic profile of admitted students to get a sense of who admissions officers at this public policy-focused university are opting for, and who they are turning away at the door.

American University Could Use a Dose of Statistical Transparency

Okay, so all we need to evaluate American University’s GPA requirements is a look at the data. Sounds easy, right? Here’s the problem: American University isn’t exactly transparent about the academic profile of admitted students. You see, such information could normally be gleaned from a quick scan of data from American’s entries for The Common Data Set Initiative. Whereas most schools maintain an online database of Common Data Sets for perusal, American only has its most recent one, for the 2024-2025 admissions cycle, publicly available.

To make matters worse, any and all GPA information, which would normally be available in the 2024-25 CDS, is also absent. So what is a genuinely curious student or parent to do? Fortunately, there are still a handful of illuminating data points we can rely on to paint a picture of the academic rigor required to earn admission to this moderately selective school. Let’s review.

American University’s Admissions Rate

First, just how difficult is it to get into American? Of applicants to American’s Class of 2028, a healthy 61.87% earned admission. The year prior, for the Class of 2027, this number was approximately 47%. For the Class of 2026, 41% earned admission. In other words, the American University acceptance rate is a bit unpredictable!

What is a Good GPA for Getting into American?

According to the Academic Profile for the Class of 2027 (the most recently admitted cohort for which we have such data), the middle 50% (i.e., the interquartile range) of GPAs for admitted students was 3.59—4.14.

Just one look at these numbers indicates that American is using a weighted GPA metric, meaning these figures are inflated according to the widely variable GPA weighting scales used by high schools worldwide. In other words, take this middle 50% with a pretty big grain of salt.

Further Context on GPAs of American Students

American University admissions officers used a self-proclaimed “holistic” review process to evaluate applicants. GPA is just one of several metrics weighed in this process. And here’s a hint: many of the other factors are qualitative, not quantitative!
