2020 Ivy League Football Play

The Ivy League football season may not take place this fall. A decision will be rendered on July 8th.

The Ivy League’s beginnings trace not to science research or philosophical debate but rather to football. Yes, football. The Ivy League was formed so these eight elite institutions could compete against one another on the gridiron. But in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, will there be an Ivy League football season this fall? Will the season — always held in the fall — be moved to the spring? These questions remain up in the air, though a decision will be announced on July 8th so we’ll know in just a few short days.

As Adam Zagoria reports for Forbes in a piece entitled “Ivy League To Announce Decision On Football July 8; Source Says Spring Schedule Is ‘98%’ Likely,” “The Ivy League was the first conference to cancel its postseason basketball tournament back in March. Now the Ivies could be on the brink of another groundbreaking decision in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The League plans to announce its plans for fall sports on July 8, with several league sources saying the Ivies plan to move football to the spring. ‘If I was placing a bet, I think it’s 98 percent, 99 percent likely that this thing is moving to the spring for the fall sports based on everything I’ve heard,’ one Ivy League source said.”

Do our readers think there will be an Ivy League football season this fall? Will it be moved to the spring? Will it be canceled altogether? If the season is held, will Dartmouth and Yale repeat as champions? Let us know your thoughts by posting a Comment below. We look forward to hearing from you!
