Since 2014, at least nine women’s colleges in the United States have chosen to welcome transgender students who identify as female in their student bodies. Read more >

A Salute to Harvard Swimming

Harvard Swim, Harvard Swimming, Swim at Harvard

Schuyler Bailar is one brave young man.

While we’re more about Dartmouth Swimming here at Ivy Coach being as Brian of our firm played water polo and swam for the Big Green, we must tip our swim caps to the Harvard Men’s Swimming & Diving Team. Some months ago, “60 Minutes” profiled Schuyler Bailar (check out the segment there), a young man who was born female but transitioned to being a man upon entering college. Read more >

Colleges Championing LGBT Students

LGBT Friendly Colleges, LGBT Friendly Schools, Colleges That Champion Equality

On this day in which our nation, and the world, mourns the senseless murder of so many LGBT Americans and allies, we figured since we write exclusively about colleges and college admissions that we would focus on colleges that serve as shining ‘cities on a hill’ supporting its LGBT students. Smith College, Wellesley College, Bryn Mawr College, and Barnard College in recent months have reversed course on policies that restricted admission to these schools to students born female. Best College Ranking for LGBT Life

Best LGBT Colleges, LGBT College Ranking, LGBTQ Ranking of Colleges

Ivy Coach salutes LGBT friendly colleges, colleges that have the backs of LGBT students and prospective students.

For years, we’ve been championing colleges that champion the LGBT community and we’ve been chastising colleges that don’t do enough for this community. We keep colleges honest in this way, in the hope of encouraging more schools across America to treat the LGBT community with respect, in the hope of promoting inclusivity. Read more >

A Salute to the Universal College Application

UCA, Universal College Application, Common Application Alternative

Ivy Coach salutes the UCA for their inclusivity.

At Ivy Coach, we have long been a champion of the Universal College Application, that little underdog that could. Our Founder, Bev Taylor, even wrote a piece for “The Huffington Post” in which she raised the question if The Common Application was restraining trade by financially penalizing universities that didn’t offer their application on an exclusive basis. University of California Application

UC Application, University of California, UC App

We at Ivy Coach applaud the University of California for including a question on their application about gender identity.

In this landmark year for the LGBT equality movement in America, the University of California has announced a change of its own to its admissions policy. Perhaps inspired by colleges like Bryn Mawr and Smith, Barnard and Wellesley or perhaps inspired by Caitlin Jenner or even Amazon’s “Transparent” (this show is incredible…you must check it out), applicants to the UC system who identify as transgender can now check appropriate boxes on the UC application. Colleges Championing LGBT Rights

LGBT Friendly Colleges, LGBT Supportive Colleges, LGBT Friendly Universities

You read about some civil rights movements in history textbooks. And others you live.

On this momentous day in the history of our union, a day in which “E Pluribus Unum” was reflected in more than our nation’s currency but also in the fabric of one of the most significant Supreme Court rulings of our generation, we figured we’d reflect on significant advances toward LGBT equality on college campuses in recent months. A Salute to Barnard College

Barnard College Admissions, Admission to Barnard, Getting Into Barnard

Ivy Coach salutes Barnard College for embracing the fight for transgender equality.

We would like to take the opportunity to salute Barnard College for following in the footsteps of pioneers like Bryn Mawr College, Smith College, and Wellesley College, all-women’s colleges that now accept transgender female applicants. As “The New York Times” reports in a piece by Elizabeth A. Read more >

Praise for Smith College

Smith College, Smith Admissions, Admission to Smith College

It’s a proud time for Smith College.

We’ve got some praise for Smith College to share with the world! While we are often the first to hold universities accountable when we don’t feel they do right (e.g., when they mistakenly send out offers of admission to applicants only to then rescind those offers moments later when they realize their error or when deans of admission are caught being loose with the truth about their admissions stats so as to boost their “US News & World Report” ranking), we are also often the first to salute universities — and particularly admissions offices — for doing right. Well Done Wellesley College

Wellesley College Admission, Admission to Wellesley, Wellesley Admissions Policies

Ivy Coach salutes Wellesley College for being a trailblazer for LGBT equality. Well done, Wellesley!

Ivy Coach recently saluted Bryn Mawr College, an all-women’s college, for changing its admissions policies by admitting transgender applicants. Well, today, we salute Wellesley College. Wellesley College, the alma mater of such figures as Diane Sawyer, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Madeleine Albright, and so many more, has now changed its admission policies as well so as to open its doors to transgender students.
