Other Top Law Schools Join US News Boycott

The boycott of the US News & World Report law school ranking is growing by the day.

The party sure is growing. The Duke University School of Law, the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, the UCLA School of Law, and the University of Michigan Law School have joined the likes of Harvard Law School, Yale Law School, Stanford Law School, UC Berkeley School of Law, Columbia Law School, and the Georgetown University Law Center in refusing to report their data to US News & World Report for the publication’s annual ranking of law schools. So with these ten top law schools on the picket line, exactly which top law schools are left?

Well, that list is short — and getting shorter by the hour. At the present moment, among the law schools in the top 14 (T14), the only schools that have yet to announce they will be refusing to report their data to US News include the University of Chicago Law School, the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, NYU School of Law, the University of Virginia School of Law, and Cornell Law School. We expect that all five of these top law schools, which currently remain mum, will soon pull out of the US News rankings as well.

And why wouldn’t these schools join the boycott? The likes of Harvard Law School and Yale Law School were the schools that took the risk — as is so often the case among the elite universities (as we’ve said for many years, where Harvard goes, the rest tend to follow). Besides, it’s not like US News isn’t going to rank these law schools any longer just because they’re not supplying the data themselves. Of course US News is going to continue ranking each and every one of these law schools and of course they’re all going to remain competitive in the annual ranking. It’s, in our view, much ado about nothing. So, like dominoes, we anticipate that by this time next week, there will be no law school among the T14 that will be reporting data to US News. Where Harvard goes, the rest tend to follow. The rest are indeed following — and fast.
